Sometimes your Google AdWords account might not have been set up correctly - for instance if you've set it up yourself, you may not know all the features and settings that you need, as Google does regularly update them.

There are also a number of hidden menus in the set up which are not always obvious to the non-Google expert.

To optimise your account it is well worth having an expert run over it, to make sure all your settings are correct. If you haven't optimised your account, you could well be bleeding money from it!

As well as the settings, you should be creating lots of individual ad groups, each with their own small number of relevent keywords.

It is also worth checking through your keywords, as if you have too many, they could be overlapping and competing against themselves!

With the different keyword match types, (broad, broad match modified, phrase and exact) you also need to be aware of the problems this can create too, if not handled correctly. If you only use broad match terms, you will get loads of impressions, but not necessarily the ones you actually want.
